Academy Sports + Outdoors Located at the Katy Distribution Center in western Harris County, Texas, just west of Houston and close to Katy, Academy Sports + Outdoors is a network of American sports items stores. Up to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts bought it in May 2011, it was an independent business controlled by the Gochman family for 74 years. It became NASDAQ listed during October 2020.

History 

Academy Sports + Outdoors was started in 1938, when Gochman and his business partner buy Southern Sales, a San Antonio-based Army-Navy with six stores in that year was no longer earning a profit. Southern Sales was the founder of History Academy Sports + Outdoors. Gochman was a San Antonio-based lawyer at the time. Although he did not have professional business training, he had learned a lot from his father, Max Gochman, who had run an extra items store in San Antonio and, as of 1935, still managed a small network of businesses in Austin.

We are proud of our past because it has formed who we are now. In 1938, a tire business in San Antonio became the first Academy location. It changed into a business selling military goods before becoming the Academy Sports + Outdoors we know today and starting to sell sports and outdoor items. With a team of more than 22,000 Team Members spread across the South, Southeast, and Midwest, we presently control 270 stores in 18 states.
